Hello There!

My name is Sigourney Porter and I am a Junior at Illinois State University. My hometown is Kildeer, Illinois, which is located in the North West Suburbs of Chicago. From being such a young girl and having my mom dress me in the most adorable outfits from popular children’s stores, it led me to have a intrest for fashion as I grew up. Here at Illinois State University I study Fashion Merchandising and minor in Business Administration. Both I believe go well together because I can gain a better understanding of the creative and business aspect of the industry.

Attributes

My past job experiences have taught me a lot about the working environment. The skills I have and will develop will help me grow as a person and further my future career.  A few of the skills I have acquired overtime is my creativity, independence, and how I go about solving problems. When it comes to me being creative, I think outside of the box. For example, this year I am taking on the responsibility of being my sororities apparel chair. With that I am able to come up with designs that past apparel chairs haven’t thought of doing yet. Another attribute of mine is how independent I am. I can take on a task by myself, but also if needed with a team too because I have the ability to work well with others. Lastly, my ability to solve a problem efficiently, will better a working environment. Throughout my career, there will be days where a situation will occur when I least expect it and it will be my responsibility to find a solution. No matter how far you are in your career, I believe one can achieve a unlimited amount of skills.

Future Goals

The future can be a scary thing because it is the unknown and no one likes not knowing what the future holds. Having an end goal keeps one in check and working towards something. My goal at the moment is getting an internship with a company that will lead me in the right direction for my future career. Interning with a company that can teach the ins and outs of the industry will help me figure out exactly what I want to do. Right now I could see myself after college becoming a buyer or a visual merchandiser, but who knows where I will end up. When I was a young girl going to little boutiques in my town, I knew one day eventually I would open my own. I feel that if I work hard and keep reminding myself that hard work pays off, I will someday reach my end goal. I have always told myself, “If I am doing something for the rest of my life, I would want to be doing something I love”. That being said, fashion has and always will be my passion.

Visual Merchandising Analysis

Within this blog, one will learn a little about me and my career goals, but also able to take a look at the work I had done for my fashion promotion class at Illinois State University. This blog allowed me to put what I had learned from class about visual display and to apply it to real life. I was able to look at store displays and reflect and critic what I had seen. This project allowed me to show recruiters that I have no problem working with social media and the internet, which is a good skill to have because this industry is becoming more and more popular with online shopping. Also, it allowed me to give my views towards the development of this industry, by giving my thoughts on what companies are putting out there for all to see.
